Renting a car in Costa Rica is absolutely the best way to get around!
Many hotels or condo rentals are within walking distance of the beach or your favourite restaurant but why not do some exploring while you’re here?
What a shame to miss out on the Llanos de Cortez waterfall or seeing the sunset from another beach…
Over the years, we have established a great relationship with our partner, Adobe Rent a Car. They have been in business here since 1990 so offer a great deal of experience to their clients. After having personally rented through them on several occasions, we feel very confident in recommending them to our friends and clients. They have the best customer service in the industry! We love to recommend them because of their reliability, competitive prices, friendly customer service and to top it off, they have an extensive lineup of cars or trucks to choose from.
They offer vehicles with less than 24 months of wear and tear (or should I say 24 months of adventures?). Their fleet includes economy and compact sedans as well as intermediate sizes – many of which come in 4X4 models. They carry only the best car brands in Costa Rica such as Hyundai, Suzuki, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Daihatsu and Kia.
Are the roads paved in Costa Rica? Do I need a 4×4?
The roads in the major towns and cities are paved as well as the main highways. As in any country, resurfacing and repairing potholes are an everyday occurrence but that means they will only get better as time goes on. There is no need for a 4 X 4 unless you plan to take some adventures off the main roads ie. to the volcano area of Rincon de la Vieja or Monteverde.
Should I use a GPS?
Waze is the best GPS option for Costa Rica although Google Maps has steered us in the right direction on more than one occasion. A good old-fashioned map is always handy especially when the GPS systems are taking you on a wild goose chase. The National Geographic Society has produced a wonderful water resistent map that stands the test of time.
