Two beaches named Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica

An important point that most tourists need to be aware of is the fact that there are two beaches named Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica. One is located in Guanacaste, while the other Playa Hermosa lies in Puntarenas. The Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas is one of the best surfing havens in the country.

However,  Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste is just 20 minutes from the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia. One of the best maintained beaches in the country, Playa Hermosa, offers visitors crystal clear waters for scuba diving. The gorgeous scenery makes it a very popular beach strip on the west coast.

High environmental standards

Playa Hermosa is a winner of the ‘Bandera Azul’ or ‘Blue Flag’ designation a prestigious award given to beaches that demonstrate high environmental standards and excellent safety facilities. Playa Hermosa, which means ‘beautiful beach’ in Spanish, lies seven kilometers north of Playas del Coco.  Playa Hermosa has made a name for itself with its idyllic beauty and lush surroundings. It is a 2km, long grey sand beach, encircled by tropical forests and ridges of volcanic rock. The Hermosa Beach area is a great family destination for all to enjoy.

This beach is relaxed, rarely crowded and is laid back most of the year. It’s a great retreat for those who wish to sit for awhile and soak up the sun. With warm water temperatures and ideal weather conditions all year long, Playa Hermosa is the perfect spot to vacation or live.

Convenient accommodations with restaurants that line the beach shore are there for you to explore.  Recently many luxury hotels have also set up in Playa Hermosa to take advantage of the pristine conditions.


Playa Hermosa is perfect for swimming with some of the best scuba diving in the country. It offers amazing diving safaris and snorkeling opportunities for those who enjoy being out in the ocean. You can also have great fun renting out kayaks, sailboards, windsurfing equipment, canoes or jet skis from the many shops that line the beach. Local tour companies also offer organized fishing trips or catamaran or sailing cruises.  Nothing beats watching the sun as it sets over the horizon as you drift along quietly under sail.

For those who prefer to try their luck on land, there are guided horseback tours available in the surrounding area. If you wish, you can even take a few days away from the coast and head up to the Arenal Volcano.  They offer great accommodations and the opportunity to relax in the various hot springs located around the volcano.
